Winner singles sydney International 2014

jiske griffioen

Day 5 of the Sydney International. Temperatures are rising! It was hot on court. Nothing compared to Melbourne, where a heatwave is torturing the players at the Australian Open. But also a hot day in Sydney.

I played Sabine Ellerbrock in the final. It was a real fight, and it took 2,5 hours to finish the match. I started well and took a 3-1 lead. But then Sabine started to play a little better and the first set was close. I had a setpoint at 5-4, but couldn't convert. Sabine took the set 7-5.

The beginning of the 2nd set was close as well. But at the end of the set I played a little better, and took the set 6-3.

The 3rd set was similar to the 2nd set. We levelled at 2-2, but after that (even tough all games were close) I won the next 4 games. At my 2nd matchpoint I took the match 5-7 6-3 6-2. Happy with my first singles title of 2014. My third singles title at the Sydney International.

Now I'm at the airport. I will fly to Melbourne today. We have some very hot days ahead of us. I'm only playing singles next week. One more week to go before I will play the 1st Grand Slam of the year. Aussie Open here we come!!!!
