Cajun Classic

jiske griffioen

The 19th of march, it was the start of the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge (Louisiana). Last year I didn't travel to the States to play the tournaments in april. So it was great to be back here this year.

The first round I had a bye. In my second round I played Mischa Spaanstra. She is an upcoming Dutch player. I never played her before, but knew her cause she is training at the National Training Centre in Almere as well. I played a good first match and beat Spaanstra 6-1 6-0. I played doubles with Francisca Mardones and we won the quarterfinal 6-0 6-0.

On friday I only played singles. My opponent was Katherina Kruger. She is the number 10 at the moment, but I didn't play her much over the last year. I was struggling a bit in the first set, but won 6-4 6-2.

On saturday I had two semifinals to play. In singles I played Marjolein Buis. The first set was close, but I took it 6-4. After that I took the second set 6-2. In doubles we had a tough team to play, Jordanne Whiley and KG Montjane. As Mardones and I are not used to play together, it was going to be a hard match. The first set was really close, but we lost it 5-7. And after that we weren't able to win another game, losing the second set 0-6.

On sunday I played the final against Aniek van Koot. The day started with a lot of rain. They almost dried the courts, when more rain came. So it took a while, before we were able to go on court. The first set I was up the whole time and I took it 6-3. In the second set I wasn't making enough pressure, and I was down 2-5. From that point I put more pressure on Aniek by hitting a little harder. This was working and I took the second set 7-5. Happy to claim my second title of 2014!!!
