World Team Cup 2015

jiske griffioen

On friday the 22nd of may I took the plane to Turkey, to compete in the World Team Cup. The only event each year, where we compete as a team. This year the team of the Netherlands was represented by Aniek van Koot, Diede de Groot and myself. Bas van Bentum was coaching our team. Besides the womens team, the Netherlands also competed in the mens and juniors event.

It is really pleasant to compete in a team once a year. We started matches on tuesday, competing against the hosting nation Turkey. Aniek and I both won our singles matches, and after that I teamed up with Diede de Groot to win the doubles match as well.

The next day we played against South Africa. As they beat Turkey as well, the winner of this meeting would make it to the semifinal. Aniek beat Mariska Venter in the 1st singles match. After that I beat KG Montjane 6-2, 6-1. Aniek and Diede won the doubles match as well.

In the semifinal we had to play against Great Britain (last years finalist). Aniek won a long battle against Lucy Shuker (6-4 in the 3rd set). After that I won my singles against Jordanne Whiley 6-1 6-2.

Japan beat Germany in the other semifinal, so was our opponent on friday. Aniek played the first singles, and had no problem beating Kanako Domori. After that I played world no. 1 Yui Kamiji. The first set was close, but I took it 6-4. And I won the 2nd set 6-3. We won the World Team Cup. The Dutch women won it many times, but it's still special to win this trophy as a team. It was great week!
