Once a year only, we as wheelchair tennis players, compete in a team event, The World Team Cup. And this year this tournament is in Tokio. So excited to go to this city. On the sunday evening, after losing the final at the Japan Open, I fly from Fukuoka to Tokio. There we will meet the rest of the Dutch team, cause besides the women and men teams, the juniors will also be there to represent our country.
When we are still at the airport, we receive our draw from one of the coaches who’s already in Tokio. We are placed in poule A together with France and Columbia, and will play the next day against France.
I won’t be playing the first day as I got injured in my match against Yui Kamiji at the Japan Open. So I will be supporting Aniek van Koot and Marjolein Buis who will play the singles matches. The both win and also the doubles match after that, so a 3-0 victory against France. The next day we have a day off.
The next after we play against Columbia. I’m still not able to play, due to my injury. But the other ladies play well and also a 3-0 win over Columbia, so we are in the semi final.
In the semifinal we play against Russia. Aniek van Koot wins the first singles match against Viktoriia Lvova 6-4 6-2. After that I play against Ludmila Bubnova. I take the first set 6-3. But in the second set I struggle. Due to my injury I wasn’t able to train a lot this week and I need that rhythm to feel confident. My opponent is hitting a lot of winners, so it makes it hard for me to get back into the set. But eventually I take the 2nd set 7-5. So we are in the final!!!
In the final we play against China. They entered the World Team Cup to win the qualification and now they are in the final. Marjolein plays the first singles match against Hui Min Huang and it’s a thriller. She wins 6-4 in the 3rd set, so we lead 1-0 when I play the second singles against Zhenzhen Zhu. It’s the first time I play her and at the beginning of the year she already beat some top ten players. My level is a lot better compared to the day before against Bubnova. I put my opponent under pressure without a lot of unforced errors. I win the match 6-1 6-1, very happy with this performance. So with a 2-0 victory against China, the women team from the Netherlands has done it again! Thanks Aniek, Diede, Marjolein, coach Dennis and our fysio Annelies for a great week!!!
